Biomechanical comparison of two stabilization techniques of the atlantoaxial joints: transarticular screw fixation versus screw and rod fixation.
OBJECTIVE To compare the biomechanical stability imparted to the C1 and C2 vertebrae by either transarticular screw fixation (TSF) or screw and rod fixation (SRF) techniques in a cadaver model. METHODS Ten fresh ligamentous human cervical spine specimens were harvested from cadavers. The specimens were tested sequentially in the intact state, after injury and stabilization (unilateral left si...

STUDY DESIGN The feasibility of inserting a screw for the narrow isthmus with a high-riding vertebral artery was evaluated in patients subjected to posterior atlantoaxial transarticular screw fixation. OBJECTIVE To demonstrate the feasibility of inserting bilateral screws and obtaining a stable atlantoaxial complex for patients with a high-riding vertebral artery. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA...
متن کاملPercutaneous transarticular atlantoaxial screw fixation using a cannulated screw system and image guidance.
In 2000 a cannulated screw stabilization system for posterior cervical instrumentation was introduced in our department for use in complex cervical fixation procedures. A special feature of the system is the use of thin Kirschner wires for drilling the screw paths and then placing the self-drilling, cannulated screws securely over the wires. Percutaneous application of C1-C2 transarticular scre...
متن کاملAtlanto-axial fusion with transarticular screw fixation.
We reviewed 161 patients, from four centres in Switzerland, who had undergone posterior fusion of the upper cervical spine with transarticular screw fixation of the atlanto-axial joints. They were followed up for a mean 24.6 months. The vertebral artery and the medulla escaped injury and only 5.9% of the complications were directly related to the screws. The rate of pseudarthrosis was 0.6%.
متن کاملPercutaneous anterior transarticular screw fixation for atlantoaxial instability: a case series.
We reviewed the outcome of a retrospective case series of eight patients with atlantoaxial instability who had been treated by percutaneous anterior transarticular screw fixation and grafting under image-intensifier guidance between December 2005 and June 2008. The mean follow-up was 19 months (8 to 27). All eight patients had a solid C1-2 fusion. There were no breakages or displacement of scre...
